Think You Know Me Thursday: The Ring Edition

1 Nov

The time has come for me to suck it up and be honest with myself. I can’t keep being in denial any longer. It is time to take my wedding/engagement rings off…

Please don’t fret that I am kicking The Hubs to the curb, or him me. For one, if he were to try to get rid of me a mere month or so before graduating with his doctorate, my very southern, very protective father would have him buried in one of his ponds in Arkansas. *Just remember hubs…you never want to sleep with the catfishes* Secondly, I decided last week to keep around for a bit because he never fails to make me laugh and support me.

No this post is about the fact that my wedding rings are now too big for me. I have flung them off my hand 3 times this week alone and I am terrified of losing them. However, I am not ready to get them sized because I am not done losing weight and I feel nekkid without a ring on.

Please ignore my nails. I am a chronic nail biter, who falls off the nail wagon from time to time.

As you can see, my rings are nothing resembling the monstrosities the celebrities like to sport, nor are they even close to the size and monetary value of standard engagement and wedding rings these days.

Regardless, these rings are priceless to me.

My Rings: The Story

My hubs and I met when we both worked at the grand old store of Walmart. Both of us were in college at the time and this was my second job…as in I worked two jobs and went to school. I was working in jewelry and he was working in toys…they were right next to each other. I was instantly attracted to his nerdy chic plastic eyeglasses. This was a good decade before nerd chic was fashionable, and I loved his confidence to be so bold.

After multiple shameless flirting sessions (mostly on my part) and attempts to “hang out” (again on my part), we finally started dating.
Side note: One attempt to “hang” outside of work, was when I invited him to a concert which I just happened to have an extra ticket to…he turned me down. The reason: “I don’t really like Matchbox 20”. This is classic hubs. He was a severe metal head when I met him and he was honestly not interested in the concert, but was interested in me. He said he was stupid for not going because he could have endured Matchbox 20 for a date with me. 🙂

So fast forward a bit and hubs catches me straightening the jewelry cabinets and admiring a particular set at work. He asks me about them, and I tell him that I really like that style. We were pretty serious by this point, so we set out to look around at some bigger jewelry stores at some sets.

One night over dinner, I point blank told him that I did not want him to have to make payments for a few years on a ring for me. When it came time for us to marry, I did not want to have debt on my ring. He was in school full-time, had ensemble commitments for his music scholarship, and worked part-time at Sears. It just seemed crazy to me that he would be making payments on a ring for me when he had such little disposable income. I told him that when he was ready to take that step, to please consider the $400 set at Walmart because I loved it as much as the $2,000 + sets…his response…I already have the Walmart one in layaway.

I mean come on man! Don’t tell me that! I told him as much and said he should have played coy, but that is classic hubs as well. Honest to a fault at times. That is my engagement story. It is not fancy, romantic, or any of the things movie moments are made of. It was however surprising, and rather funny to recount. It is perfectly us.

These rings came from where we found our start and represent the struggling to make it young couple we were when we fell in love.

I love them and hate to not wear them, but the thought of losing them is even worse than feeling nekkid. So, I need to suck it up and take them off for now and find some acceptable costume replacement to ease my discomfort from being ring-less. Besides, someone might try to snatch me up if they think I am single! 😉

Have you tried those things that go on inside the rings to help them fit? I had to use those the last time I lost weight. I did eventually resize the rings, only to have to enlarge them when I regained the weight. I had to take mine off a couple of weeks ago because they were killing my finger, which was a big incentive for me to start trying to lose weight again. They are a bit looser now. It feels good to not have the circulation cut off.

Good call on the ring sizers. I am on the hunt for them now. I know exactly what you mean about the circulation!

What a great story (my parents actually met working at Sears – mom was in men’s clothes, dad in shoes. They’ve been married almost 35 years now)! Be careful with those rings – but celebrate the fact that you’ve been so successful with your fitness journey!

Thanks Sarah! I actually left Sears to go to Walmart where I met him. Then he left Walmart to work at Sears. We joke that we were destined to meet either way!

WTG !! When I gained weight I actually went in and had my ring made larger….can’t wait for my ring to start flinging off like yours, so I too, can take it in and put it back to it’s original size. Once again GREAT job !

How about wearing them on a necklace chain? Keep the very special rings still close to your heart…:)

This made me laugh. I have a similar husband who though loves to plan surprises can’t hide it to save his life. We’ve had many of those moments. Congrats on the circumstances though I know what you mean about feeling naked without the ring. You’ll get them back soon.

It never fails as soon as he plans something he tells me he has something planned or purchased. I am much more stealth. I want you to think I have nothing up my sleeve and then bam! Surprise!
