Merry Planksmas! A December Fitness Challenge

28 Nov

Today’s post is brought to you by my new obsession:  Planking!  Planking has officially joined the ranks of kettlebell in my mind.  It is a new challenge that I love competing with myself to do.

Back in the summer, I gave the old elbow plank a shot .  In my mind it looked simple enough to get into position…huh I was so wrong.  I could not even get myself into position to hold it for 1 single second.  It just was not happening.  Over the course of the last few months, I have tried again to no avail.

This week, I thought I would give the plank another go.  I recently realized that there is the push up plank and the elbow plank.  The push up plank is where you are essentially in the up push up position, and you just hold it.  As I mentioned on Monday’s post, I was able to hold this position for 31 seconds.  I did not try the elbow plank because I just assumed I still could not do it.

Tuesday was a rest day, and I was itching to plank to try to beat my time.  I also wanted to try the elbow plank on the sly to see if I could even get into position.  I was able to push up plank for 46 seconds.  Then, I was also able to get into the elbow plank for 15 seconds.

That 15 seconds may seem minuscule  but let me tell you, it was the longest 15 seconds of my life.  Plus, I actually did it!  Planking is physically taxing, but you know what I love better than that?  The mental effort it takes to hold that position.  I can see the clock ticking.  I try to look away think of other things, and then flat out tell myself to not let go.  It is such a rush to accomplish something so physically difficult that requires such a great deal of mental effort to complete.

I can definitely tell a difference in the muscle groups worked by each position.  My chest, shoulders, and arms start to burn and cuss me out when I am doing a push up style plank.  During that 15 seconds in hell, that I call the elbow plank, My core was on fire!!!

My plan is to do a plank a day going forward (#plankaday).  I will most likely alternate plank positions every other day.  Right now, I do not think it is sustainable for me to do both variations of the plank 7 days a week and my kettlebell tabata 4 days a week.  So, my goal is one plank move 7 days a week, and kettlebell tabata 4 days a week (I gots to get my body looking good y’all!)

Which brings me to you and your hot bods!  This new-found obsession has spawned the first ever FatChicktoFitChick challenge!

Let’s start planking it up daily for the jolliest month of the year.  Tweet me, Instagram me, and/or email me pics of your plank timers, of you planking, and of you passed on the floor from planking yourself silly!  I will post your pictures periodically through the month and give you a shout out for being awesome. Let’s motivate each other to make New Years resolutions a thing of the past.  Why wait?  December 1st seems like the perfect day to be fit!  Be sure to use the #merryplanksmas hashtag and tag me @fatchicktofitchick in your daily posts on instagram!

First off, I LOVE the picture. Second, I will totally share this on my blog. Not sure if I’ll join the challenge as I’m 38 weeks pregnant and thinking it might be best to wait a little while to start “planking” again. Cheers.

Thanks so much for sharing! At 38 weeks pregnant, my guess is your plank would be more like balancing on the belly 😉 I have to say I am pretty pleased with how the picture turned out!

Hey! I found you through MamaLaughlin. You all keep me motivated! I just read through your whole blog-great job!! I’m so proud of you! We started our weight loss journeys right about the same time. I began on June 4 at 262lbs. My 30th birthday was July 4, so I think of it as my “Thirty Days To Thirty Years.” If I didn’t get started then, I would end up being that statistic of people who gain weight and can’t lose it after they turn 30. I’m at 209lbs right now. I’ve had a bad plateau the past 3 weeks, so it’s nice to have some boost in inspiration! I haven’t timed my planks, honestly, I’ve been scared to. I used to be at 1 minute in late 2009 when I worked out with a personal trainer. I bombed that. LOL I look forward to getting back into the swing of things with you!!

I am so glad you found me and thank you for taking the time read through my blog. I completely understand the “get down to business” mentality that happens at 30. I was pregnant with my daughter when I turned 30, so it took me until 31 to get with it. Kudos to you for all your hard work and success on your weight loss. You have done great to lose all that you have. I am proud of you as well! I am so excited that you are joining in on all the planking fun and that we have connected. Are you on instagram or Twitter? If so be sure to connect with me there too. If not be sure to email ( pics and updates of you planking exploits! I want to share as much as I can with everyone.

I look forward to traveling along this journey with you!

I will email you pictures! I don’t do Twitter or Instagram. I barely have a Facebook account. I use it to connect with other websites but don’t actually use the FB website. Ironic, isn’t it? Thanks for your words of encouragement! we’ll get this knocked out together!
