The Origin of Tink’s several Monikers…

7 Feb

Today I am linking up with the lovely Amanda at My Very Own Modern Family for a little name game of sorts.

As many of you probably assumed, Tink is not my daughter’s name on her birth certificate.  It is however a real nickname she ended up with within the first weeks of her life, but before I get to that story, you should know Tink was not her very first “name”.

Before I even became pregnant, the Hubs and I had been discussing Monchichis…you know those little monkey creatures from the 80’s?  I had seen them in a catalog and was instantly geeked out because of course I had one and loved it!  He was oblivious to this fuzzy creation, and I am pretty sure he rolled his eyes at my excitement that they were “back”.  Later on we were discussing our future child, and we always joked that our kid would probably come out looking like it was wearing a baby toupee, because we both have an insane amount of hair that grows like we ingest miracle grow for breakfast.  After another round of “OMG our baby will be hairy. BAAAHAAAAA”…I mentioned that it would be a Monchichi.  We both thought that would be a good name for the baby before we knew the gender…original and quirky…it was perfect.

Within a month or two, I got that big fat positive on the old pee stick and Monchichi was no longer a fantasy…  My girl over at Diary of a Crossfit Mom, actually got me a Monchichi doll (a girl, how prophetic of her) the day I told her I was pregnant.  So for a few weeks, the baby was Monchichi…that was kind of a mouth full, and not really easy to roll off the tongue.  We ended up shorting it to Cheech.  So while all these women all over the country are calling their precious legume sized babies things like peanut, bean, etc…I am calling my kiddo Cheech.  Again…perfection.

Cheech Jangles

She ended up with one other variation of this name when we saw her move on the ultrasound for the first time.  She was wiggling like a manic in there and was just this tiny little gummy bear.  I told hubs she was dancing around like Bo Jangles…so Cheech Jangles became another name for her.  She was called Cheech until we found out that Cheech was in fact a girl.  From that point on she was our baby girl Harper.  Originally her middle name was going to be Claire, but one of my best friends from high school had just had a baby and named her Claire.  I am just one of those people, who cannot use a name someone close to me is using in any way.  I am weird, but at about 30 weeks pregnant, her name changed from Harper Claire to Harper Quinn.  I was worried people would think I was crazy, but it was a good decision.  It is the perfect name for her.

The name Tink came about shortly after we all came home from the hospital.  Lots of exhausted, half awake, half asleep, and completely and insanely in love chattering between me and my newborn, found me calling her Tinker as in a baby talk version of stinker…Tinker became Tink or Tink Tink.  We both ended up calling her Tink Tink so much that we worried she would not know her real name when the time came.  Since then, we have not called her Tink other than on the internet as a nickname.

So there you have it.  I cannot wait to tell her stories of how her name was once Monchichi, Cheech, Cheech Jangles, and Tink,  and then hear her little laugh when she cracks up at the silliness of it all.

I used to love Monchichis! It cracks me up that you called her Cheech. I love the name you chose, though. Very modern and pretty. She is most definitely a Tink, just adorable! Thanks for linking up!

Mystery solved..I was curious too! We are a HUGE nickname family…one of my first blog posts way back in the day was on this topic. We too worried none of our kids would actually know their given names…and on the middle name issue/same as a friends…I have a story! Short version…we named our girl Finley…super uncommon…anywhere…especially in our town of 3,000 when a FRIEND named her kid Finlay (pronounced the same) 8 months later. I was steaming mad!! They now go to school together and it just bugs me. I suppose I should be flattered but I wasn’t.
